IMPRESSIONS OF THE REGION
The tranquil holiday resort of Kaprun lies in the valley, directly below the Kitzsteinhorn glacier. Together with Zell am See, it forms the Salzburger holiday region of Zell am See-Kaprun. The glacier, accessible year-round, and the two high mountain reservoirs of Mooserboden and Wasserfallboden offer ideal excursions for mountain enthusiasts and families alike. From the top of Europe’s largest open inclined lift, the Lärchwand, the sheer magnitude of the Mooserboden’s reservoir wall is sure to impress. Guided tours explore the inner structure and the reservoir’s generation of electricity, while a trip to the National Park Centre in Mittersill or the Noriker Museum in Niedernsill make for a memorable, nature-orientated experience.
Ski fun and guaranteed snow at 3000 metres
From autumn to late spring, the Kitzsteinhorn glacier offers optimal ski and snowboarding conditions at an altitude of 3000 metres. Where else can you enjoy a few hours of skiing, followed by a dip in Lake Zell, warmed by the intense spring sun, or a round of golf at the Zell am See-Kaprun Golf Club?
Ideal for beginners and families are Kaprun’s local Maiskogel mountain and Piesendorf’s Naglköpfl ‘fun sport’ mountain. Here you can enjoy somewhat quieter ski slopes and mountain huts, while the Maiskogel’s year-round toboggan run, ‘Maisiflitzer’, offers an exhilarating non-ski activity for all. Use the FUN+CARD to get extras thrown in for the whole family, like a sledging or snowshoeing outing!
Swimming fun and relaxation in summer
While snow covered slopes and fantastic downhill runs beckon in winter, wonderful hikes and walks for all the family greet you in summer, as well as a rich variety of cycling and mountain biking routes. Cool off in the bathing areas on Lake Zell’s shores at Zell am See, Thumersbach or Schüttdorf. Even sailors and surfers will not be disappointed, whilst a round trip on one of the Schmittenhöhenbahn’s passenger boats is a great choice for a family outing. Or enjoy a fabulous day out at Niedernsill’s family-orientated leisure lake with playground, crazy golf, tennis courts, climbing wall and very pleasant lakeside restaurant.
Relax and tank up energy
What could be more enjoyable after an action-packed day in the mountains than to pamper yourself at Kaprun’s Tauern Spa with its unparalleled architecture, outdoor pools, panorama saunas, steam baths and salt water pool? Take time out for a beauty treatment or massage, while your children explore the exciting aqua world.
Cultural highlights in Kaprun
Kaprun’s twelfth century, medieval, hilltop castle is the locals’ cultural landmark. Once a fortress, the castle is used nowadays for events like concerts, clubbing, exhibitions and lectures, not to mention the castle’s Association which organises traditional, medieval festivals.
An ancient spectacle of nature
Experience the wonders of nature at the spectacular Sigmund-Thun Gorge. After the last ice age, the Kapruner Ache carved its way down into the valley. Up to thirty-two metres deep and three hundred and twenty metres long, the ravine’s jagged rocks, mossy wood and gushing water create an almost fairy-tale mysticism. In summer, be sure to experience the gorge close up on the specially constructed wooden walkways and bridges.
Try out the Pinzgauer specialities in one of the many small restaurants, and in the local bars in the evening, unwind over a sumptuous cocktail or glass of wine. During the daytime, take a stroll and discover the many boutiques.
