IMPRESSIONS OF THE REGION
Situated in the Gastein valley, these 3 localities each offer their own individual character.
The Monte Carlo of the Alps
The valley’s main resort is Bad Gastein, full of charm from a bygone era. Its abundance of chic villas from the Belle Epoque along with its landmark Gasteiner waterfall create an exceptional picture. At 1000 metres above sea level, this spa resort has been recognised since the Middle Ages for the healing properties of its thermal waters. The thermal rock baths, radon-rich thermal springs and world renowned Gasteiner ‘healing cave’ make for a perfect health and spa programme. Add to this an extensive range of sports and leisure activities like downhill and cross-country skiing, hiking, Nordic walking, mountain biking and riding, and it’s easy to see how Bad Gastein has something for everyone.
The Gastein valley’s historical centre
In Bad Hofgastein, hospitality combines with an international flair. A diverse choice of sport and leisure, together with spa facilities for all and a superlative selection of gastronomic delights leave no wish unfulfilled. Lose yourself in a rich tapestry of music and culture, enjoy numerous sports activities both in winter and summer and unwind in the alpine thermal baths with their own sauna world.
A traditional village with a heart
Completing this trio of villages is Dorfgastein where a varied sports and leisure programme awaits active holidaymakers and families alike. This is a paradise for sports and mountain enthusiasts. It ranks highly, with rustic mountain huts and crystal-clear mountain lakes dotted along 115 km of hiking paths, which cater to all levels of ability. From the top, enjoy fantastic views of the Hohen Tauern mountains. Mountain bikers have around 20 km of signposted routes and even paragliders are catered for.
In winter, the ski area of Dorfgastein-Großarl offers long downhill runs, while an extensive network of cross-country trails awaits you. Or simply take a walk or sleigh ride through this fairy-tale winter wonderland.
In summer, take a peek at local life in the Gasteiner valley: summer concerts and the museum in Bad Gastein; the farmers’ markets and ‘shopping under the stars’ in Bad Hofgastein; and Klammstein Castle and the village festival in Dorfgastein. In winter too, Gastein offers an action-packed programme of events: the FIS Snowboarding World Cup; Art on Snow; Snow Jazz; Snow Polo World Cup; and the Red Bull PlayStreets.
